Video: 5 clear reasons not to do-it-yourself

The thought of simply doing a home repair project yourself rather than hiring a pro sometimes can be tempting. After all, you were doing more than just handing your dad the hammer and screwdriver all those years. You were his pupil. You studied his work closely. You marveled at how he could repair just about anything with a monkey wrench, some duct tape and a can of WD-40. Now, you're ready to take your place under the dishwasher or up on the roof and DO-IT-YOURSELF.

But, before you pull your son away from his PS3 and ask him to "pass the phillips head screwdriver," watch our favorite home repair bloopers. You might just decide it's better to hire somebody who really knows what they are doing.

Maybe that's what your dad wanted you to learn after all.

1: How not to trim a tree
Some friend this guy turned out to be.

2. Why you shouldn't fix your own roof
The law of gravity definitely applies in this case.

3. How our dads might fix the toilet (if our moms wouldn't kill them later)
The toilet performs a relatively simple function. While certainly not elegant, this solution definitely is simple.

4. Wait till you hear how doctors removed the nail from his skull
He definitely will be saving these X-rays.

5. And finally ... A collage of calamities
If those videos above didn't convince you to hire a pro, these case studies in failure just might.

I love that toilet fix video, ha ha ha. I also love how the woman says at the end "Just...a little redneck." Classic. (plus, i thought that was a green siren on top of the commode, half expected it to start flashing when it flushed.)

Oh, I remember the days of serves as my dad's helper, handing him the hammer and duct tape when he needed it. It's true. That man thought he could fix anything with duct tape ... thankfully, he didn't work in a nuclear power plant.
